I have recently discovered “6 Future Playgrounds That Harness Kids’ Energy While They Play”* and IBM’s list in 2011 of the five technologies it thinks will change the world in five years, with kinetic energy topping that list.
Discovering these articles has sparked a dormant interest in kinetic energy. But more specifically, an interest in what are the applications or what will be the potential applications based on Kinetic energy? This article provides a definition of kinetic energy and lists 3 potential applications with a commercial focus to allow the reader (and the author) time to further investigate advances in kinetic energy based technologies. I look forward to dialogue on this subject matter.
So what is Kinetic energy? In simple terms it is energy in – potential energy – energy out as illustrated in the figure below.
So, what are three potential advances?
1. Ocean wave energy converted into electricity;
2. Kinetic Energy Recovery System (already utilised in Formula One but what are its other applications e.g. bicycles?);
3. The human body as a kinetic energy platform?
